february nostalgia
i’ve been feeling nostalgic. maybe it’s all the war.
also probably that the youngest among us turned eighteen. she’s using her time wisely: watching dolphins at the river with a boy.
we got our nails done when i went up to celebrate. she directs me to parking garages now, points out the safe walkways. i watch her place orders and pay money and move through the world as a young woman and my heart just bursts. the privilege to see a person becoming their own.
i mention the diner and she says it’s still open but i don’t ask to stop for coffee; i keep it preserved in a foggy bygone mourning.
